Narrative

On 4 September 1956 starting at 1945 EDT, observers reported a round reddish object due east of College Park, Maryland (also reported as due east of National Airport). Object was observed for 20 minutes when reported. Observation was ground visual. Initial observer Mr. ___ at College Park simply saw the object in otherwise black sky. National Airlines Reservation observers reported no stars in the sky, slight overcast. Weather Service at Bolling AFB reported 5/10 cloud cover with two inversions and two near-inversions over the Washington area. The reporting officer checked with the Andrews AFB weather officer, who reported the planet Mars was clearly visible in an otherwise starless sky.
